Breaking news that the strongest earthquake to hit the northeast in more than two decades shook parts of Massachusetts on Friday morning, with aftershocks rattling parts of the region hours later. The U.S. Geological Survey said the 4.8 magnitude quake was centered in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, at 10:23 a.m. People from New York City to Portland, Maine, to Montreal to Richmond, Virginia, reported feeling it. The quake was likely on the Ramapo fault, which runs through the Appalachians up through New Jersey and then into downstate New York.
