The crash was caused by an alleged drunk driver. Diaz was traveling in a Toyota Corolla that was struck by a Ford SUV driven by 62-year-old Charles Howell. Diaz and another person in the Corolla were taken to the hospital, where Diaz later died. The other occupant of the Toyota, who was not identified was also injured in the crash. Howell was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and driving under the influence. The accident remains under investigation by the Sacramento Police Department.
