He pulled onto the right shoulder and exited the truck to retrieve an item when he was struck by a white Toyota RAV4. The driver of the vehicle fled from the scene without stopping. CHP said the driver of a tractor-trailer stopped and blocked the scene until officers arrived. Rivera succumbed to injuries from the collision. CHP continues to search for the suspect and vehicle.
