The Independence Police Department says an officer stopped a Chevrolet Z71 pickup truck in the area of 20th Street and Northern Boulevard for a traffic infraction. That is when 66-year-old Joe W. Williams left the scene, triggering a pursuit that ended near 31st Street and Wabash Avenue when the pickup crashed into an Audi Q5 and a Kia Sportage. After impact, the pickup left the roadway, crashed through an iron fence, and slammed into a tree. Two people traveling in the Kia were injured in the wreck and taken to an area hospital for treatment. The incident remains under investigation.
