Mario Alonzo was arrested after he struck a woman and her 2-year-old son in the Highland Apartments parking lot. A 23-year-old woman was walking with her son, who was in a stroller, when they were struck by a speeding Chrysler 300 whose driver fled the scene. The toddler was rushed to Vanderbilt Pediatrics for treatment of critical injuries. His mother sustained minor injuries and was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment. Authorities located the driver, 27-year-old Mario Alonzo, and found open beer bottles in his vehicle. He was arrested and charged with vehicular assault, driving without a license, resisting arrest, and open container violation. Authorities say they continue to investigate the incident and await results from a blood sample. Pending the outcome of the investigation additional charges are possible.
